Cameo Portraits

Throughout my Cameo Portrait series, I have melded Victorian components with 21st century women to give a new take on cameo portraiture. I have collected and repainted ornate antique frames to mimic the metal scrolling of a cameo pendent. The portrait itself is completed in acrylic paint on wood. This series started as a way for me to marry my love of portraiture and antiques, but has evolved Ito an exploration of why and whom I paint.

Each portrait is of a woman who has played a part in my life, from my sister to my friends and colleagues. I've discovered that painting those I love brings about a greater joy than simply painting someone with him I have no connections. Sharing my art and the portraits with them is rewarding. I previously related to Frida Kahlo in her saying that she paints herself because she knows herself best, but know I paint those I feel know me best. 'Cameo Portrait V: Jodie' is of a friend I lived and worked with over summer 2018. 'Cameo Portrait III: Kylee' is a college friend.
